The roguelike genre is the horseshoe crab of gaming. It evolved years before most other games were possible, and hasn’t changed much since.
For historical reasons, most Roguelikes don’t even have graphics. Any object on the screen is represented by a single ASCII character. Today’s image would be depicted in-game as something like this:
